The Columbus Blue Jackets have penned forward Mathieu Olivier to a lucrative six-year, $18 million contract extension ($3 million AAV) through the 2030-31 National Hockey League season, as announced by club President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Don Waddell today.
Olivier, 28, boasts a stats sheet showing 25 goals and 30 assists for 55 points along with 352 penalty minutes, 675 hits, 184 blocked shots, and 246 shots on goal. This comes from 229 career games with both the Blue Jackets and Nashville Predators since his NHL debut in 2019-20. Since being traded from Nashville on June 30, 2022, he has racked up 22-26-48 with 264 PIM, 573 hits, and 210 shots on goal in 181 appearances with Columbus.
Waddell expressed his satisfaction, stating, “Mathieu Olivier has become an integral part of the team due to his strong work ethic, commitment, leadership, and other essential elements that contribute to a team's success. Securing Mathieu's future with the Blue Jackets was a top priority for us, and we are delighted that he and his family will remain part of our Blue Jackets family for many years.”
Standing at 6-1 and weighing 226 pounds, Olivier has achieved 12-9-21 with 113 PIM, 232 hits, 66 blocked shots, and 80 shots on goal in all 61 games with the Blue Jackets this season. His performance ranks him second in the NHL for penalty minutes and hits, making him one of the two players with 10-plus goals and 70 or more penalty minutes, the other being Ottawa's Brady Tkachuk. In the 2024-25 season, Olivier has recorded career highs in goals, points, penalty minutes, hits, blocked shots, and shots on goal.
Having started with Nashville on a two-year entry-level contract in May 2019, Olivier played in eight games with the team in 2019-20. In 2020-21, he was fifth in the league for penalty minutes after posting 3-2-5 and 70 PIM in 30 appearances with the Predators. His initial season with Columbus in 2022-23 saw him achieve career highs in assists and games played, ending with 5-10-15 and 81 PIM in 66 games.
Born in Biloxi, Mississippi, and raised in Levis, Quebec, Olivier has also participated in 156 career American Hockey League matches with the Milwaukee Admirals from 2018-22, adding 19-23-42 and 262 PIM. His overall numbers in 300 games with the Sherbrooke Phoenix, Shawinigan Cataractes, and Moncton Wildcats in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League from 2013-18 were 59-71-130, 390 PIM, and a cumulative +27 plus/minus rating.
