Former Premier League official David Coote has been charged by the Football Association for comments made about ex-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp in a leaked video on social media.
The 42-year-old, who officiated at the 2024 European Championship, was suspended last year after the video showed him making disrespectful remarks about Klopp and Liverpool. Coote was later dismissed by the Premier League referees' body PGMOL after an investigation into his behavior.
The FA has charged Coote with acting in an improper manner and using abusive language, specifically referencing Klopp's nationality in the video. However, he has been cleared of any gambling misconduct allegations. Coote had previously denied claims of discussing issuing yellow cards before matches.
Although not currently involved in football, Coote is still subject to FA jurisdiction due to his previous role in the game. Any punishment will be determined by an independent regulatory commission, with Coote given the opportunity to admit or deny the charge. Failure to pay any fines imposed could result in a suspension from all football activities.
Coote, who revealed he was gay earlier this year, has acknowledged past struggles with substance abuse and underwent therapy to overcome it.
