Southampton gaffer Ivan Juric has thrown down the gauntlet to his squad, challenging them to demonstrate that they are not "the worst team in Premier League history". Sitting at the bottom of the table, a distant 17 points away from safety, the Saints are in danger of relegation with only nine points from 29 matches.
In the annals of the Premier League, Derby County currently hold the unfortunate record for the lowest points total, finishing at the bottom with 11 points in the 2007-08 season. Determined to avoid such a fate, Juric rallied his side as they prepare to face Crystal Palace, who recently advanced to the FA Cup semi-finals.
"We must show fighting spirit and give it our all. We need to be fully motivated," emphasized Juric. "It's crucial for us not to sink to the depths of being labeled the worst team in Premier League history. Our aim now is to climb above the last spot on the table. I believe we are up to the task, in good form, and capable of securing victory."
Southampton's recent track record does not paint a pretty picture, with five consecutive losses in the league. Their upcoming opponents, managed by Oliver Glasner, are on an impressive run, winning four of their last five games. Palace's cup triumph over Fulham saw them notch their fifth consecutive victory across all competitions.
On the injury front, midfielder Will Smallbone is sidelined with a groin issue, while defenders Jan Bednarek and Taylor Harwood-Bellis are expected to feature despite picking up knocks while on international duty.
