'Keep Your Mitts Off': Protests against Trump spring up throughout American cities.
Anti-Trump protests held in cities across the US
Massive demonstrations were held in cities all over the United States on Saturday to express disdain for President Trump, marking the biggest nationwide display of opposition since he assumed office in January. The "Hands Off" protest organizers aimed to stage rallies in 1,200 locations, covering all 50 US states. Hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and Washington DC, among other cities. Protesters highlighted various issues with Trump's agenda, spanning from social to economic concerns. Following Trump's recent announcement of imposing import tariffs on numerous countries worldwide, demonstrations were also hosted outside the US, including in London, Paris, and Berlin.
In Boston, attendees voiced support for Turkish international student Rumeysa Ozturk, who was apprehended by masked US agents near Tufts University, sparking outrage among demonstrators. Meanwhile, in London, protesters displayed signs with messages such as "WTAF America?", "Stop hurting people", and "He's an idiot", while chanting "hands off Canada", "hands off Greenland", and "hands off Ukraine" in reference to Trump's foreign policy changes. The gatherings in Washington DC witnessed speeches by Democratic lawmakers that highlighted the influence of wealthy donors in the Trump administration, particularly Elon Musk.
The protests come amid a challenging period for Trump and his supporters, as indicated by recent election outcomes and approval rating polls. While still holding some support, Trump's approval ratings have slightly dropped in various polls, reflecting growing discontent among the public. The White House defended Trump's actions, emphasizing his commitment to safeguarding programs like Medicare while portraying Democrats as a threat to these initiatives. Despite the protests, Trump spent the day golfing at his Florida resort and engaged in no public events. One of his immigration advisors, Tom Homan, dismissed the protests, suggesting they would not alter the facts of the situation.
