The enigma of the Welsh medieval graveyard intensifies as secrets from the past emerge.
Mystery deepens over medieval cemetery near Cardiff Airport runway
An ancient burial ground discovered near Cardiff Airport continues to baffle experts, as new revelations add to the enigmatic nature of the find. Unearthed last year, the cemetery dates back to the 6th or 7th Century and has revealed numerous skeletons in unusual positions with surprising accompanying artifacts.
The latest discovery that almost all the buried individuals are women has raised even more questions. Despite showing signs of physical labor, the women were also buried with signs of wealth and luxury, painting a complex picture of their lives.
An intriguing find was the remains of a woman unceremoniously thrown into a ditch, contrasting with the carefully arranged burials of the others in the cemetery.
Led by Andy Seaman from Cardiff University, the ongoing excavation has uncovered 39 adult skeletons so far, with the majority believed to be female. Surprisingly, only two children have been found at the site, hinting at a possible delay between their burials and those of the adults.
Artifacts such as fine glass and pottery found in the graves suggest a high social status for the individuals buried, possibly from a broader region including Wales and south-west England. DNA analysis and dental examinations are providing further insights into the lives and diets of these ancient people.
The archaeologists are determined to solve the mysteries surrounding this unique cemetery and shed light on the lives of ordinary medieval individuals. Despite the contradictions and unanswered questions, the team is dedicated to uncovering the secrets of this intriguing site.
